F&PM Track Gang, near Mount Morris, 1889

Track maintenance has always been a manpower-intensive process. Prior to the development of specialized machinery to take care of the heaviest and most repetitive work, the answer to most track maintenance tasks was to add more manpower.

major projects required more crewmen, as shown in this 1889 photo of crews involved in relaying rail near Mount Morris on the Flint and Pere Marquette.

PMHS Collection, donated by James Hulett, great-grandson of Herman Forth, shown in the center of the track.
