Pere Marquette Berkshire #1239, the last of the PM Berkshires built, sitting on the siding at New Richmond during the summer of 1948.The stiff 1.23% northward grade beginning just north of this location and extending to East Saugatuck made it necessary to either use helper engines or to double the hill. Number 1239, a Class N-2 built in 1944 for the PM, spent part of its service life in helper service at New Richmond. It was retired in the early 1950s and scrapped in 1961.
