Pere Marquette Berkshire #1217 laying over on the siding at New Richmond during the summer of 1948.Class N-1 Berkshires, such as #1217, were a common sight at "Helper", as New Richmond was later called. They were used, along with the PM's two Class SF-6 2-10-2s, to shove freights up the 1.23% grade of East Saugatuck Hill as the mainline leaves the valley of the Kalamazoo River.
