One of the ways you can identify a second-hand locomotive on the PM is by its number. When the PM would purchase a locomotive from another railroad, it would number it into the series for that wheel arrangement, but beginning with the 99th number in that series and counting down.PM Mikado #1099 was purchased from the Erie in 1929. All five of the Mikados the PM purchased in this transaction arrived pulling small Vanderbilt tenders. These were quickly replaced with much larger tenders of the style more typical to the PM, such as the one shown in this April, 1940 photo taken at Detroit.
