In 1927, the PM ordered the ten Mikados that would become its class MK-2. These were the only USRA-design 2-8-2s that the PM ordered for itself, as its class MK-1 "Mikes" were all originally part of orders for the Indiana Harbor Belt, the Wabash and the New York Central. One feature which differentiated the MK-2s from the MK-1s was the booster mounted on the engine's trailing truck. This provided an extra 10,000 pounds of tractive effort at low speeds. These were the only booster-equipped 2-8-2s on the PM.
MK-2 number 1050 is shown here at Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 7, 1937.
