The bulk of the PM's mainline passenger service was powered by Pacifics purchased between 1910 and 1921. Of these, the SP-3 class, the last ones built, had the most distinctive tenders. Locomotives #711-722 had tenders with low sides, very unusual looking trucks and a capacity of 8,000 gallons of water and 14 tons of coal. In 1935 and between 1939 and 1941, these tenders were replaced with ones of larger capacity. In the early 1940s, the SP-3s' air pumps were moved from the side of the boiler to the pilot deck.
Number 711 is shown at Grand Rapids, Michigan's Union Depot in August, 1937.
