For much of the first half of the last century, the Consolidation was the workhorse of most American railroads. There is ample evidence that this was true on the Pere Marquette, as the PM owned more 2-8-0s than locomotives of any other wheel arrangement. The 167 locomotives with this wheel arrangement were organized into four classes (C, C-1, C-2 and SC), but there was considerable variation among the members of each class.PM Consolidation #310, shown here in St. Thomas, Ontario on August 13, 1939, was built by Alco's Brooks Works in 1905. When it was photographed, it had less than three years left on the PM, as it was scrapped in June of 1942.
