M&NE GE 44-ton Switcher #1 at Traverse City in 1947

The Manistee & North Eastern's first diesel, GE 44-ton switcher #1, photographed at Traverse City, Michigan in 1947.

Number 1 was built in August, 1946 and served the M&NE, mostly in the Traverse City area, until 1949 when the locomotive was leased to the C&O. The C&O moved it to Norfolk, Virginia, where it switched cars onto and off of car floats. In 1966 it was renumbered to 8303, the number it wore until it was retired and scrapped in 1974.
