PM switch engine #11, at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland during November 2007.
In February 2004, the roof of the Mount Clare Roundhouse structure which is the centerpiece of the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore collapsed under the weight of snow accumulated during a particularly heavy snowfall. Among the pieces of equipment inside at the time was PM switcher #11, the PM's second diesel electric locomotive. Unlike several other pieces which were in the roundhouse, #11's damage was largely cosmetic, requiring only the replacement of sheet metal, glass and handrails. For this reason, it was among the first of the damaged pieces restored.
The restoration shop took advantage of the need to repair #11 to restore it to a condition matching its configuration when it was delivered by EMD in 1942. This involved replacing the twin sealed-beam headlights with single lamp headlights, relocating the horn to its original position and removing the full-length handrails which the C&O had installed along the walkways. As a practical matter, it was decided to leave in place the extension to the exhaust stack that the PM installed shortly after delivery. It was then repainted using information provided by the PMHS. The quality of the museum restoration shop's work speaks for itself- they did an excellent job on this locomotive, making it in many ways better than it was before the roof collapse.
