Pere Marquette Historical Society Archives - Holdings

The PMHS Archives are a small but growing group of collections of photos, papers and documents related to the Pere Marquette Railroad, its predecessors and successors.

This archive is housed at the Joint Archives of Holland on the campus of Hope College, in Holland, Michigan. Directions to the archives and the hours they are accessible are available on the Joint Archives of Holland web site.

The contents of our archives are available for research at the Joint Archives of Holland. We do not have the resources available at present to offer mail-order copy services for documents from our collections at this time.

The Society's current holdings are as follows:

The Pere Marquette Railway was established in 1900 and primarily operated in Michigan's lower peninsula, with access to Chicago, Toledo, and across Ontario to Buffalo. The railroad also operated a string of carferries that transported railroad cars across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin and Ontario ports. In 1947 the railroad was merged into the Chesapeake & Ohio system. The Pere Marquette Historical Society, founded in 1995, publishes a newsletter and historical journal. Included in the collection are Pere Marquette Railway maps, track profiles, blueprints, bridge and equipment diagrams, annual reports, lists of stations and officers, employee rule books, and union wage agreements, as well as bound volumes of reprinted documents. Similar documents for the Chesapeake & Ohio and other railroads are collected, as are reports of railroad-related institutions such as the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Michigan Railroad Commission, and the Michigan Public Service Commission. Paper and microfilm copies of the Pere Marquette Magazine, The Rail, Pere Marquette Service Magazine, Chesapeake & Ohio Pere Marquette and C & O Lines are also included.

History
The Pere Marquette Railroad was established in 1900 (superceding the Flint & Pere Marquette Railway Company of 1855) and primarily operated in Michigan's lower peninsula, with access to Chicago, Toledo, and across Ontario to Buffalo. The Pere Marquette mainline crossed Holland, and a branch line from here served Muskegon, Grand Haven, and Allegan. The railroad also operated a string of carferries that transported railroad cars across Lake Michigan to three Wisconsin ports from Ludington, and to Sarnia and Windsor, Ontario, from Port Huron and Detroit. Photographs of many of the Pere Marquette carferries are featured in books on Great Lakes shipping. The Pere Marquette Railroad operated independently until 1947, when it was merged into the Chesapeake & Ohio System.

The Pere Marquette Historical Society was founded in 1995. The non-profit organization publishes a bi-monthly newsletter featuring short articles, current news, and modeling information. The society also publishes a semi-annual journal featuring longer historical articles, maintains a website (www.pmhistsoc.org), and hosts an annual summer conference.

Scope and Content

The Pere Marquette Historical Society Collection contains original, bound copy, and photocopied documents of the Pere Marquette Railroad from various dates in the 19th and 20th centuries. Included are maps, blueprints, bridge and equipment diagrams, annual reports, lists of stations and officers, employee rule books, and union wage agreements, as well as bound volumes of reprinted documents. Similar documents for the post-merger Chesapeake & Ohio (C & O) Railway are collected, as are scattered documents originating with other railroads, and reports of railroad-related institutions such as the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Michigan Railroad Commission, and the Michigan Public Service Commission. Paper and microfilm copies of the house organs Pere Marquette Magazine, The Rail, Pere Marquette Service Magazine, Chesapeake & Ohio Pere Marquette and C & O Lines are also collected.
The PHMS collection is arranged in five series reflecting the materials contributions of individual Pere Marquette Historical Society members. Any oversize items are listed at the end of their respective series.

Three boxes in the Art Million Series contain scrapbooks of C & O Railway items collected by A. W. Gillette. These contain photographs, newspaper clippings, and company documents maintained in their original ordering.

File folder titling of the Forms and Memoranda section of the T. J. Gaffney Series reflect original Pere Marquette Railway folder titling (e.g., "Ontario-Miscellaneous").

Note the storage locations for the various series, and for oversize rolled maps and plans in the Art Million Series.
